WFMW: Backwards Edition Again!

WFMW Banner

This week Shannon, over at Rocks in My Dryer is hosting another backwards edition of WFMW. (You know, the kind where I get to ask YOU a question!)

So, here’s my problem:

We have only one bathroom in our tiny tiny duplex. We all three have to share it and I’m having a heck of a time keeping it clean. What are your ideas to help me keep the clutter and germs to a minimum? There is hardly any ventilation in there, so I can’t use bleach on a regular basis. Other than that, send your ideas!

What’s NOT working for you this week? Head on over to Shannon’s Place and join in!

Oh, and Just FYI, we have started potty training this week. Things are going well!

I love me some Comet spray (not the gunky powder stuff!)! It is great for hard water stains, and it keeps everything looking shiny. Also, if you are able to give things a quick wipe down with a clean rag every few days, things might stay looking shinier and keep you from feeling like the yuck is taking over too quickly. Hope that helps!

daily swish and swipe! My trick is that whenever I see spots on the mirror, I will spritz it and the sink or toilet back (whichever looks worse) with Windex and after cleaning the mirror, wipe whatever surface was looking grungy with the same papertowel.

The next day the mirror should still be clean, so I will grab my tub and tile cleaner (chem free from melaleuca) and give the sink a good cleaning and then wipe the outside of the toilet before throwing the papewr towel away.

Next day I will deep clean the toilet, etc, etc. Basically, I pretty much wipe down the sink and toilet top every day, deep clean the sink, inside and base of the toilet and the tub once a week and spray shower walls with a no work cleaning spray after every shower and wipe down once a week.

This way I am never spending more than 5 min’s a day cleaning the bathroom, but it is not left to get all grungy all at once, or to become a job that requires 20 minutes of scrubbing.

Like Prairie Chick, my secret is to go in there often. 3 little boys and 2 cats use one bathroom and I go in there a few times a day, to wipe and swish. I, like you, am not fond of harsh chemicals. Most of the time I use simple window cleaner for the mirror and a few baby wipes for just about everything else. Of course, when I get around to a bit more “deep cleaning” I use a bit more “intense” stuff. Like Pinesol.

I use Charlie’s Soap. It’s a detergent not a soap and it cleans VERY well. The smell reminds me of Windex but not as strong (smelling). It’s an all purpose cleaner that’s about as environmentally friendly as a detergent can get with no added perfumes or other frilly things. If you can’t find it in your local store/area you can buy direct from the manufacturer and the shipping is free with no minimum order. (no I don’t own stock nor do I get kickbacks from promoting them - I just think it’s THAT good)

I suggest keeping a spray bottle with something mild, such as vinegar and water, on hand to spritz and wipe whenever you are in the bathroom and have an extra minute. This route doesn’t take a lot of time and the vinegar will disinfect. Another plus is that there are no noxious fumes. On the bright side, you only have one bathroom to clean!

I try and leave a container of wet wipes or Lysol wipes in my kitchen, bathroom, and car. It really helps if you just wipe it down every once in a while. That makes the deep clean much easier later!

I’ve been cleaning my bathroom lately with a mixture of Dawn and Borax on a wet washcloth. I let everything dry then rinse or sweep the Borax powder away. Dawn is a surprisingly good cleanser and Borax deodorizes. I can even clean with my baby following me around without worrying about fumes or if she touches a wet spot with her hands (though I would rinse her off of course but it won’t eat her skin away!) For the toilet I wipe down daily with an antibacterial wipe but the inside bowl unfortunately requires stronger stuff. I use a disposable scrubber, flush, then add a cup of Clorox, close the lid, and set a timer for 30 minutes–keeping a close eye on the kiddos to make sure they don’t go in there! Flush Clorox after 30 minutes–it should bleach out anything the scrubber missed.

Without much ventilation, I’d go for a green cleaner so you are not all breathing those fumes. I suggest some Bio-Kleen Bac Out. Put a cup of hot water in the sink, add a small squirt (it’s super concentrated) and you can wipe everything down with that. As for clutter, get rid of all knick-knacky stuff. And make sure you and Dr. D are sharing items–i.e only have one kind of soap, one kind of toothpaste, etc.

In addition to all the great advice here, I’d like to point out that one of the dirtiest spots in the room is the doorknob! Don’t forget that when you’re wiping things down.
I’m also surprised about the ventilation. I thought bathrooms legally had to have good ventilation, but maybe I’m wrong?

Clorox wipes. Wipe down the surfaces and you are good to go.

I love the Mr. Clean Sponge (or cheaper versions) for swiping down counters and sinks. Also a quick swipe to the mirror is always needed (what’s with that? ;-)) I then do a spritz over everything either with lysol disinfectant or clorox’s new safer - everyday spray, and leave the bathroom to dry out on it’s own. I like the idea of green products but they do NOT sterilize, and the bathroom is the one place I don’t chance that not being clean as it can be…

We have 4 people and 1 bathroom (one of the not so charming things about a beautiful charming craftsman built in 1907) one thing I highly recommend is clorox toilet tabs. they keep my toilet bowl looking clean for weeks. I also use the clorox wipes and wipe things down almost every day. It really helps. (neither of these have a bleachy smell…. there are no windows or fans in my bathroom so I also have the ventilation issue)
