I worry about that myself and hug the hand rail like a granny. :-) The plant looks like one that comes up at my back door every year. I finally stopped trying to kill it since I couldn't and now I just let it grow. It offers a bit of cool shade to my otherwise hot deck. BUT...please read the description since you have a wee one. The plant is poisonous. Those white blooms will turn into deep purple berries by late summer. And they are messy if you smush them. It is a pokeweed, among other names. Mine gets to the eave of the house if I don't nip it back. Maybe you can add some non-slip pads to the stairs? And if you think wood stairs can be slippery, you should stay away from carpeted stairs. I think they're worse.
