Help!

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

I’m ready for another round of Reader’s Choice.  Ask me a question, I’ll give you an answer.*

Nothing is off limits.  Give it your best shot.

If I’m blown away, I might send the author of the best question a little “thanks for playing” token.

*I can’t promise it will be the answer you were looking for, or want to hear!

Pencils and Rulers and Pens, Oh My!

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

I have always loved going shopping for school supplies. The unsharpened pencils, new folders, fresh notebooks. They are all loaded with possibility. A fresh start. I think that it is important for all kids to be able to have that fresh start at the beginning of the year.

Evidently the Big Box Office Chains share my feelings. Well…not exactly. They are running big promotions for common school items. Some are offering free items in hopes of attracting you to the store to buy other, bigger ticket, items. Others are offering items for just pennnies with hopes of getting you into the store to buy a bigger ticket item.

I hit up the three main chain stores and scored some free pencils and rulers, $.01 glue, $.10 notebooks, and $.20 ballpoint pens, and $.25 crayons and pencil boxes.

None of which, I plan to keep.

Tomorrow, Ladybug and I will be heading to the local women’s shelter to help ease their back-to-school burden. It’s not much, but it is something that I am thrilled to do. I got the fun of scoring the deals, and they will get the fun of passing these things out to kiddos that need them. It’s a win-win.

Zoo Fun

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Last Sunday, we met up with some of the families from one of the playgroups I joined. I didn’t get any pics of the kiddos, but I certainly got pics of all the animals! It was chilly and raining, so we didn’t stay terribly long, but we got to see several animals while we were there.

What you can’t tell, is that this guy’s foot kept twitching, like he was dreaming. Ladybug loved it!

I just want to go over and cuddle with this bear!

This little guy wouldn’t even pull his head out long enough to let me get a picture!

Ladybug thought this Hippo was really neat. Until it climbed out of the water and pooped in the pool!

These Peacocks were way too close. Have I mentioned that I don’t care for birds? They kind of freak me out!

Seeing this Zebra takes me back to High School. Our mascot was a Zebra!

No, it’s not a two-headed rhino. (Contrary to what Karen thinks…)

The cute little train that costs way too much and the wait is way too long….

…but was worth it just to get this shot.

And this is my favorite.

Eek!

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

We got home from a trip to the park this morning to find a tiny little caterpillar on the front porch.  I’m shocked, but Ladybug insisted that we “capture” and study him.

This was right after I asked her if she was really going to pick up that bug.  She said, “Oh mommy” and gave me this look.

She did it.  It is now on the table (in it’s container) right next to me.   We’ll see what happens next!

Chicken. It’s what’s for dinner.

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Upon seeing that I was serving chicken for dinner….

Ladybug: Yummy! Corn on the Cob!

Me: Yes! And Chicken!

Ladybug: I LOVE Corn on the Cob! And real chicken.

Me: Real Chicken? What’s Real Chicken?

Ladybug: Chicken that’s yummy for your tummy.

Me: Oh yeah. That sounds good. Where do you get real chicken?

Ladybug: McDonald’s.

Good to know where I rank on the food chain.

Not cut, but dried.

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Right before we moved, I kept noticing a familiar burning smell coming from my hairdryer. Yep, my hairdryer was about to die. This is not the first hairdryer that I have burned out either. In fact, I have had TWO spark out in my hands. (Unlike some people who can keep hairdryers until they are relics…)

My thick, wavy hair does not dry quickly, unless I give it hot, fast heat.

I have had more hairdryers over the years than I can count (on one hand at least), but they have all had one thing in common. They were cheap. See, I was under the impression that a cheap hairdryer was just as good as an expensive hairdryer, so I used to get inexpensive ones. My only requirement was that it be 1875 watts and have a concentrator nozzel. (Ironically, I DID shell out the big bucks for a Chi Iron….which I feel was WELL worth my money.)

So I continued to buy cheapies until this month.

After talking to my old hairdresser, she advised me to just head to the local beauty supply company for a moderately priced hairdryer. So I fought the urge to run to Target and get another cheapie.

This is the one I got.

Yes, I paid the price that I would usually pay for 2 or 3 hairdryers, but I am hoping that this one will outlive every other hairdryer that I have ever owned. I’m hopeful. It works VERY well. In fact, I didn’t know that a hairdryer was supposed to produce such good results.

Actually, I was considering getting a new haircut…until I got the new hairdryer. It has given me such great results that I haven’t even used my Chi Iron since I got the dryer. And I’m no longer considering a haircut, unless I wake up tomorrow having decided that I want short hair. If this one blows up on me…I guess I’ll have to go all out and get the dryer that I really wanted.

Making Friends.

Monday, August 11th, 2008

I’ve been doing tons of research about places to take Ladybug, playgroups to join, and activities to attend. We’ve got a few things lined up, but I just can’t get excited about them yet. Perhaps it’s the dread of meeting new people.

I’ve always been one to have only a few close friends. I don’t mind that either! See, I don’t really like to take the initiative to go out and meet new people. I was shocked when Dr. D came home last week with a phone number and email address for someone that he thought I might want to meet. Did he expect me to make the first contact? Surely not.

So after a few days of hem-hawing around trying to come up with what to say, I sat down and sent an email. Of course, it worked out. It was actually fantastic. I can’t wait (neither can Ladybug) to get together again.

While this gives me encouragement, I know that I have pretty much wasted this first year here in Michigan. The only people that I have met are colleagues of Dr. D’s, and none of them have families or kids. I am in desperate need of some “mommy-to-mommy” time, and that makes me miss my friends back home even more. I know, however that I won’t make friends unless I get out and meet people. So I am tyring. I really am.

After all, how often does a fantastic friend just fall in your lap?

Emma

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

Well folks, I would like for you all to meet the newest addition to the family.

Here’s Emma!

What’s that? You can’t see her?

Well guess what. Dr. D and I can’t either.

Ladybug has been using the toy phone from her kitchen set to talk to Imaginary Emma all night long. Here’s what I know so far: Emma lives in Michigan too, and she pooped on the potty this afternoon. Evidently she gets M&Ms as a reward, too.

I don’t know where Emma came from, but I do know that I’m not ready for the imaginary friend phase.

1-2-3-4

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

I just heard Ladybug singing it over the baby monitor. She’s supposed to be going to sleep, but I could hear her singing, “bah bah bah..bah bah bah bah…” I just love that!

Our new addition

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

I think we have a pet!  I’m pretty sure that he is the same little squirrel that was in this tree.

I was getting ready to let the dogs out, and this is what I saw from my back door.

He sat under the table for a few seconds, then he jumped up to the railing.

In the words of my grandmother, “He’s a fat lil’ dude.”

Ladybug thought that he was being shy.

Then she asked if he was itchy.

You lookin’ at me?

He scooted along the rail like that for a few feet…it was adorable!  Look at his round little head!

Then he jumped over the staircase, hopped onto the grill, then to the other side of the deck.  When he finally stopped, he was up in this tree, just peering down at us.

I think we will have to name him!
