WFMW: The Backwards Edition

This week over at Rocks in my Dryer, Shannon has organized another “Backwards Week.” This means that I get to pose a question for YOU to answer. So here are my questions:

  • What do you do to save money?
  • If you clip coupons, where do you usually shop to redeem them?
  • What are your favorite “cheap knock-off” products?
  • What is your favorite easy-peasy frugal recipe?
  • What are your favorite frugal websites?
  • Any other tips or tricks?

When you’re done here, head on over to Rocks in my Dryer to find out what is working (or not working, in this case) for other folks!

Oh yeah…I almost forgot!  The Bloggy Giveaways “It’s Your Turn” Giveaway Carnival is coming up.  I’m taking suggestions on things to offer for a giveaway!  What would you like to see being given away here?

WFMW—You Pick it!

Shannon over at Rocks in my Dryer is having another one of her Theme Weeks this week.

WFMW the Backwards Edition.   You know, backwards in the sense that I ask a question and YOU provide the tips!  There is only one problem.  I’m running on fumes here.  I can’t think of any burning questions to pose.  So…..any of y’all have questions?  I can pick one of yours and post it for all of the internets to see!

WFMW: Target’s After Christmas Sale!!!!!

WFMW Banner

This week, I would like to share my new found obsession with Target’s After Christmas Clearance Sale! Here’s how it works:

After Christmas, all the leftovers are marked 50% off. That is, until the 31st rolls around! Then…stuff goes to 75% off!!! I was able to finally score stockings and stocking holders for my family. I paid appx $2.50 for each of my stockings AND the stocking holders!!

I have heard it from a little birdie that it will go 90% off on 1/4. I couldn’t wait that long, but I’ll probably go back and see if they have any candy or ornaments left.

This is what is working for me. What works for you? Head on over to Rocks in My Dryer and share your own tips and tricks!

WFMW: The Holiday Edition

WFMW Banner

Shannon, over at Rocks in my Dryer has asked for tips on managing the holiday craziness that hits every year about this time!  Here’s my only suggestion:

When wrapping gifts, I try to wrap each family’s gifts in a different paper. If I am only using brown paper, I will use different colored ribbons. This way, if I am headed to the in-law’s house, I can swoop in and grab all the green wrapped presents.  If I am headed to my family, I’ll pick up the red presents.  This helps me to make sure that the correct gifts make it to the correct locations!

You can even find GREAT wrapping paper on sale after the Holidays are over so you will have some on hand for next year when you start wrapping presents.

That’s what is working for me!  What works for you?  Head on over to Rocks in My Dryer to find out other tips and tricks and leave your own!

WFMW: Chopsitcks

WFMW Banner

Ok folks, I know you all have these around the house. You order Asian take-out and you don’t use all of the chopsticks that they give you. Instead of just throwing them into your junk drawer, put them to good use!

Here are a few of the things that I use chopsticks for:

  • Dinner (duh)
  • When making tea in the microwave, place one chopstick in the water before heating it.  It will help keep it from getting super hot and splashing out when you add the tea bag.
  • Makeshift Bamboo Skewers
  • Makeshift Drumsticks
  • Giant Cake Testers, when you run out of toothpicks
  • And most importantly, scraping poop off the bottom of shoes!

That’s what is working for me this week.  What is working for you?  Share your tips and tricks over at Rocks in My Dryer!

WFMW: The What-Do-I Fix? Edition

Reminder: Visit Monday’s Post and enter to win a copy of Laura Duksta’s Book, I Love You More!!
WFMW Banner

Being the first Wednesday of December, Shannon over at Rocks in my Dryer has instituted a themed edition of Works-for-me-Wednesday. The theme this week is, “What do you fix for dinner when the family is hungry and there is no time to prepare a delicious feast?”

My Standard go-to meal is Chili. Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, I almost always have the ingredients for Chili in the pantry. (Except for one day last week…I had to turn my Chili into Tacos because I was out of a few things!)

Chili:

  • 1 lb lean ground beef *
  • 1 Medium Onion (I use a large purple onion, but I like onions.)
  • 1-2 Cloves of Garlic, Minced (Ok, I put TONS of garlic in mine. 5 or 6 Cloves, but I like Garlic too.)
  • 1 10oz Can of Diced Tomatoes (Rotel or regular tomatoes)
  • 1 can of Store Bought Chili (this is mainly for flavor…I usually don’t include it)
  • 1 can of Kidney Beans (or whatever chili beans you prefer)
  • 1 10oz Can of Tomato Sauce
  • 1 Can of Beer, Cook’s Choice. (You can use water instead of this and it will be just fine.)
  • 1 Package of Williams’ Chili Seasoning. (I can’t find this here in MI, so I got McCormick’s last time and it was ok.)
  • Chili Powder to taste.
  • Cumin to taste.
  • Ketchup to taste. Yes, Ketchup. I know. I usually put in 1/4 to 1/2 cup. It makes a difference in the outcome if you omit the ketchup.

*I use ground beef, if I have it. It can be made with ground turkey (I like it that way), ground pork or ground chicken as well. It would be awesome with venison, but none of us hunt. My mom makes it with Tofu Crumbles instead of meat and she likes it that way. I’ve never tried it, but it must be good if she gets my dad to eat it!

Add Onion and Garlic to a hot stock pot or pasta pot. Let them sweat until they are translucent. Add the meat and brown it thoroughly. Drain the fat. Add tomato sauce, tomatoes, beer, beans and chili. Simmer until the beer reduces, about 10 minutes. The longer it sits, the better it will be. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s still good straight off the stove!! I usually put out saltines or Fritos (If I have them) and shredded cheese for people to mix in with their chili. Personally, I crumble up my crackers and add them to the bowl along with the cheese. I don’t care for Fritos in mine, but other folks in the family do!

This will serve 4 to 6 people. If you want to feed more, just dump in more stuff double the recipe. It is VERY forgiving. If you are out of something, just use the next closest thing. Or make tacos. The good news is, you will have leftovers if you make enough. It is even better the next day. You can eat it as a meal itself, or you can put it on hotdogs. Homemade Chili Cheese Coneys anyone? Yum!!

Dang. I’m going to have to make Chili soon!

This is what works for me. What works for you? Head on over to Rocks in my Dryer and share your tips and tricks!

While you are here, be sure to visit this post and enter to win the book, I Love You More! The Deadline for entry is Friday!
